Freedom of Thought and Belief: Serious and Active

Excerpted from Reyes, Ed Aurelio C., Press Freedom: The People's Right, "Part One: Back to Basics," (MANILA: Philippine Movement for Press Freedom, 1992) p. 7 (Emphasis in the original)

.......Freedom of thought and belief is both serious and active.
.
.......Serious because it has to go beyond the freedom to deliberately indulge in endless fantasies. The human mind instinctively thirsts for the truth and one can never really deceive oneself to believe what he or she knows to be untrue.
.
.......This freedom is innately and necessarily active and cannot be preserved in a state of impotence. The right to liberty and to pursuit of happiness therefore not only involves the freedom of movement of a person within a country's borders but also necessarily encompasses the freedom of one's mind, of one's eyes and ears, and of one's tongue, as well as one's prerogative to engage in actions not explicitly violative of the rights and legitimate interests of other persons. Freedom of thought is non-existent if imprisoned in one's own skull!
.
.......On this matter, the late "Chino" Roces, responding to speakers at a tribute shortly before his death, fired a volley of rhetorical questions: "Is freedom of speech just for the speaker to be able to say his piece, get things off his chest? Or is there a corollary freedom to be heard and be listened to? Does freedom of speech lose its value if what we express is simply papered over, dismissed with a shrug, ignored?"
.
.......Toward the end of that same response, "Ka Chino" gave what we can take as his own answer: "I pray you will offer your lives again and again not only to protect freedom of speech, but also to insist on your right to be heard and listened to as the truly sovereign people."

(This Part one of the book will be republished soon in support of the Freedom of Information Bill now pending in the House of Representatives of the Philippine Congress.)

Harmony in Unconditional Goodwill

Feedback so far (in the reversed-chronological order)

please send your feedback as a message to my FaceBook account "Ed Aurelio C. Reyes"

----------------------------------------------

Shyam Tony Reyes: Unconditonal goodwill is not only “possible,” it already exists within each of our personal quantum field. Goodwill is kabutihang-loob, state of being, of vibrational experience that does not premise its goodness on external conditions. By our God-given power of attention, we can attain awareness of and uplifting nourishment from this inner fountain of life itself. No good inside, no life force. One realization that helps unconditionality is realization that we are personally immersed in the Being of Creator, all of us, equally, one not more than the other. The difference lies simply in the capacity to be aware that it is so and act accordingly. Whether the atom is aware of it or not, it exists, depends on, follows the laws of, and thrives in the space-time continuum. So, yes, a supra-HUG to you and all existence, and One Big Cosmic Hug to the Transcendent One that made it all possible. :)

Rolly Pagaspas: I completely believe in H.U.G. However, there are layers of acceptance on the 'unconditionality', which is a function of time. All things can be accepted by a person in his lifetime. the shortest acceptance duration by a person is probably a second before he closes his eyes and his breath already cut off. From the time a person realizes the issue, have his stand and declares his non-negotiables, time as an independent factor comes into play. So a person, through another factor, may be a situation, some help from persons or things important to him, will be able to go to another 'level of acceptance' and his unconditional state will be lessened by a measurable quantity of acceptance.

Grace Pinon: Thanks Ding, HUGs back to you!

Carlos Lacanilao:
Is that really possible among people? Unconditional??? [Ding/Ed Reyes: to Carlos L.: Yes, definitely possible; though not very probable soon for most of us. We can choose to attain such goodwill within ourselves, and this behavior, as pleasantly radiated, will be contagious. We can decide to be part of this slow but sure evolution. It's worth the try!]

Daisy Carreon: Thanks… hugs back to you Ed.

Joydee R. Elizondo: HUGS too!

Marlene Damolo Howe: Thank you, Ed! Right back at you, my friend!

Discerning Desiderata's Second Sentence

..........“As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.”
.
..........“This statement, apparently containing a clause of conditionality, is the second sentence of the classic Desiderata. The clause, that can logically be read as conditional, is unfortunately also equivocal or ambiguous as to the very sense of the sentence itself.
One meaning is:
.
..........“Be on good terms with all persons; and as far as possible, attain that state without surrendering anything.”
.
..........The other meaning, as valid as the first interpretation on the basis of the composition of the sentence, is: “Be on good terms with all persons as far as possible; that is, if you can attain that state without having to surrender anything.”
.
..........In other words, it is saying that you ought to seek being on good terms with other people as long as it will be on your own terms, To concede, to agree, to meet somebody else halfway, could be construed as tantamount to surrendering something to some degree.
.
..........Let’s think and rethink of the sense of the wiser or the wisest lesson that one can derive from this second sentence of Desiderata, whatever grammarians say and whatever the author might have actually meant as its intended meaning in the first place.
.
..........In an earnest meeting of hearts and of minds, persons exert best efforts to define their patterns of interaction according to what they both can and will choose to be the mutually-desired configuration of their interaction. If one or both of them would have to alter a first or a previous preference, such shifting does not have to be viewed or felt as a surrendering of one to another, but a process of convincing to a position that is firmly accepted as the most logical and the most fair to all concerned.
.
..........It is on the basis of such earnest discussions that real unities can be forged and real, deep and lasting peace can be attained between persons, between groupings of persons, or between formal entities.
.
..........Let us further ponder this matter deeply, discern it in earnest, and rejoice in whatever measure of divine wisdom that it can increasingly carry!

Labis-labis na ang Pagluha Mo,Aking Bayan!

Labis-labis na ang Pagluha Mo,
..........Aking Bayan

.

I.

.

Nalimot mo sino kang talaga; di ba’t lahi’y dakila?

.

II.

Kalakarang ayon lang sa maka-banyaga, maka-mayaman,

Sumasamba sa dayuhang pautang, kalakal at puhunan

na siyang humihigop at sumasaid sa iyong ani at yaman;

Habang di inaalintana ang kahirapan ng taongbayan.

.

At kinabukasan mo, Aking Bayan, ngayo’y nakasanla!

.

Naipamalas sa bayanihan, higit sa tapang na lumaban;

Ginhawa't kadakilaha'y buhay at sama-sama lamang.

.

IV.

.

Sa halip na pawang tindahan, kailanga’y paglikha;

Sa mahabang taggipit ay nangapilitan silang iwan;

Wala nang mga batang mananangis sa lansangan.

.

Katutubong yaman, sasakamay na ng mamamayan,

Pakikinabangan hanggang ng mga di pa isinisilang.

At unti-unti ring aangkinin at iyo nang patitinuin

Ang isang pamahalaan na sa taongbayang tunay!

.

Prayer and Convergence Inputs for World Peace

In May 2008, two member-organizations of Pamayanang SanibLakas ng Pilipinas teamed up for the successful holding of the 2nd Philippine Convergence for Human Synergy. The two, the SYCONE-Humanity (pronounced as "Seek One Humanity") convened the day-long conference, and the SanibDasal Interfaith Synergetic Praying Community produced the text of a joint prayer for chorused praying at the lunch hour of the gathering. The conference was preceded by a three-week solicitation and collation of articles on World Peace based on the Conscious Oneness of Humanity, which served as inputs for the conference participants. The Prayer and the Input articles are now presented here in support of the On-Line Forum of "Peacecamp-Masbate 2010."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRAYER FOR CONSCIOUS ONENESS AS BASIS FOR REAL PEACE

O, Supreme Master and Creator of Universal Governance, / we are seeking your Divine Light / in order for the whole of Humankind all over the world / to enjoy real and lasting peace and love as would prevail / on the basis of a collective consciousness that we are all one. / You created us, humans, in your own image and likeness, / with all-good and almighty will and power / that we can really fulfill only by freely choosing, / to individually and together self-actualize as humans and interact as fellow-humans. //

Please teach us to know well all the various walls / that divide and separate us from one another, / please help us see both sides / of each divisive wall, / through earnest efforts to start respecting, to know better and to understand fully / the experiences, feelings and thoughts of us siblings / who now find ourselves on opposing sides of the walls. / Help us scale the walls, rise above, and ultimately smash / these walls so that the resultant separations / be replaced by convergence and unity. / And please jolt us to our senses, gift us with Wisdom / so we can shift our abilities away from building divisive walls / towards building only the bridges for bonding. //

More and more people among us have realized / That true, lasting and durable peace Can only be created as firmly rooted in conscious dynamic unity among humans. We beseech you to help us multiply, to expand further, The ranks of those who have awakened to the light of truth / so that peace may prevail in societies in the world, / as a continuance and fulfillment of the current stage of evolution / of humanity, as will please and glorify you, //

Let this be willed.

(This prayer was composed to be recommended for praying together by all participants of the "2nd Philippine Convergence for Human Synergy" the SanibDasal Synergetic Interfaith Praying Community and all the organizations and individuals who would freely choose to pray with us and to pass on this prayer to others.]

Lambat-Liwanag Offers Articles on Peace & Human Rights

The Lambat-Liwanag network for empowering paradigm shifts, a member organization of Pamayanang SaniblLakas ng Pilipinas, has been operating a growing on-line library of articles for each of these 15 paradigms seeking wider/deeper discourse, dissemination and mainstreaming. The 15 paradigms and their sub-topics are enumerated in http://lambat-liwanag.8m.net.
.
Access to the articles under Paradigm No. 14 ("Human Dignity and Harmony: Human Rights and Peace") is now being offered to everyone who visits this blog, especially the participants of the "www.Peacecamp-Masbate2010" On-Line Forum on Peace Advocacy and Education. Lambat-Liwanag supports the on-line publication of these "think" pieces, including those that our officers and leaders do not personally agree with.

Paradigm No. 14 directly accessible via http://lambat-liwanag.8m.net/14.htm.

"Human Dignity and Harmony: Human Rights and Peace" upholds the simultaneity of human individuality and human community, of both the dignity of every person upheld as human rights, and human harmony achievable only in genuine human community. Human Rights and Peace Movements should work closely together.
